Yosef started off as a scribe in Candlekeep.  It was during this time when he across a tome containing part of the Metatext.  After reading part of the Metatext, Yosef  started to perceive the world differently - seeing it to be made of text and numbers that can be interpreted differently.  In the course of trying to find an explanation to his condition, he came across a text referencing a beholder with a similar condition.  Using the keep's resources, he tracked the location of the beholder to an asteroid in the Tears of Selune. Yosef left the keep to join the Academy in hopes of getting off plater and meet the beholder and understand the condition he is at.
